Smart Lock Says Jammed Often Points to the Door

When a smart lock says jammed, test the deadbolt with the door open before you recalibrate it or buy a replacement.

If the bolt moves freely in the open door but the powered lock stalls only after the door closes, the door or strike is the leading branch.

If it stalls while open, check the exact model’s installation, batteries, and calibration instead.

Do not factory-reset the lock yet.

A reset can erase useful settings without removing physical resistance.

Make one comparison: operate the bolt manually and by motor with the door open, then repeat the powered test after closing the door normally. Record where the result changes.

The site’s smart-home troubleshooting map uses the same method: isolate the failed handoff before deleting a working setup.

The open-door comparison separates the door from the lock

Begin with the door open so the bolt does not enter the strike.

Move the deadbolt through its full travel by the normal thumbturn or key, using ordinary pressure only.

Stop if it grinds, catches, or needs force.

That result exists before the frame can interfere, so repeated motor cycles and strike adjustments cannot prove the cause.

If manual travel is smooth, run one powered lock and unlock cycle while the door remains open.

Watch whether the bolt reaches each endpoint, reverses, or stops in the same place.

Now close the door without lifting, pulling, or pushing it and run one more powered cycle.

A failure that appears only when closed points to the strike, bolt pocket, weatherstrip, hinges, or door fit. The motor is not the first purchase.

Keep the test plain. Do not push the door, lift the handle, or lean on the panel while the motor runs.

Use a small piece of removable tape to mark where the bolt touches the strike. Take it off before the next cycle so it does not change the result.

A clean open-door cycle does not prove that the whole lock is healthy. It only tells you that the bolt and motor can finish the travel with the frame out of the way.

Yale’s current Yale Code troubleshooting page, checked October 23, 2026, tells owners to test the bolt with the door open when diagnosing a jam.

On that page, smooth open-door travel moves the next check to strike alignment and pocket clearance.

That is a model-specific example, not a universal repair dimension. Use the installation sheet for the model on your door before moving or drilling hardware.

Smart lock says jammed results belong in four branches

The alert alone cannot tell you which part to order. Put the two tests into the matching row before changing anything.

What you observe Branch to investigate Do not buy yet
Manual bolt binds with the door open Deadbolt mechanism, installation, or internal hardware Batteries, bridge, or Wi-Fi equipment
Manual travel is smooth, but powered travel fails while open Mounting, tailpiece, specified batteries, calibration, or motor support Strike plate or door-alignment parts
Powered travel works open and fails closed Door fit, hinges, strike contact, or bolt-pocket clearance A replacement smart lock
Both cycles complete, but the alert remains Event history, firmware, calibration record, and model support Mechanical parts without a repeatable failure

This comparison also keeps a door problem from being mistaken for an app problem. If your contact mark or failure appears only after closing, the door strike alignment guide shows what to observe before any hole is enlarged.

That report explains why the final bolt position is not enough evidence. A useful support case includes whether the motor completed the cycle, whether the alert cleared, and whether the same command fails with the door open.

Calibration instructions change with the model

Do not borrow a button sequence from a different Yale, August, Schlage, or retrofit lock.

Calibration can mean learning bolt travel, setting handing, or rebuilding an app endpoint. The entry path varies by model.

For listed Assure and Real Living models, Yale’s jammed-deadbolt guide, checked October 23, 2026, directs owners to a model-specific handing or recalibration menu. The same page gives a different reset-based route for the Nest x Yale model.

Those routes are not interchangeable.

Installation details differ too. Yale’s Approach Lock mechanical guide says overtightened mounting screws can cause jamming over time and gives a half-turn adjustment for that product.

Do not apply that amount to another lock unless its own instructions say so. Photograph the model label and current mounting position before loosening or removing anything.

Battery advice also belongs to the exact lock. Yale’s app-operation guide specifies four new alkaline batteries together for the models covered by that page and warns against lithium, rechargeable, or extended-life cells there.

Battery rules do not carry across brands. Read the label or manual, install only the stated type, and repeat the open-door cycle once.

If the correct batteries and model procedure restore the open-door cycle, close the door and retest without pressure. If the alert returns only closed, calibration did not remove the door-fit branch.

An unsecured door ends the test

Stop troubleshooting if the bolt will not retract, the key or thumbturn needs force, the lock body shifts, a cable is pinched, or the entrance cannot be secured.

Use another safe entrance if available and contact the lock maker, installer, or a locksmith.

Do not leave the door on a repeated auto-lock cycle while the bolt is striking the frame. Repeated stalls add no diagnostic value once the open-versus-closed result is recorded.

Consider replacement only after the exact model’s support path has ruled out door contact, installation, specified batteries, and calibration. A manual failure with the door open also moves the lock itself higher on the list.

A locksmith or door professional is the better purchase when the lock works open but the door no longer aligns.

Save four items for support: the model number, a short open-door cycle video, the app’s exact alert, and the result after the door closes. Then follow the one branch your comparison exposed instead of resetting every layer.
